Jefferson County VITA is a partnership with Jennings County United Way

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax preparation and e-file for low or moderate income, disabled & elderly to help keep more hard-earned dollars in their pockets. There is no cost to clients, volunteers are IRS cerified and every return is quality reviewed. We prepare and efile both Federal & State returns at no cost to the client. Our 2026 (2025 returns) income guideline is $69,000.

 

IN Tax Amnesty 08/01/26 - 10/31/26
Allows unpaid Indiana tax liabilities prior to 1/1/2023 to be paid free of penalties and interest. Penalties DOUBLE for those who qualify but miss the window.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

  • Call 812-265-2036 for appointment
  • These three forms (download and print to bring with you OR arrive early to fill out)
    . . 1- Information Sheet & local intake form (coming soon). 2- IRS intake form (en español) . 3- Taxpayer consent form (coming soon)
  • Proof of identification (Government Issued Photo ID)
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse & all dependents  (An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted if you do not have a Social Security number.)
  • Voided check or bank account information for direct deposit (routing and account numbers) Account must be in taxpayer's name.
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and all dependents on the tax return
  • Wage & earning statements for all employers and unemployment (Form W-2, W-2G, Any 1099's such as 1099-R, 1099-DIV, 1099-G, 1099-K, 1099-NEC, 1099-Misc. etc)
  • Forms 1099 Interest & dividend statements from banks (and date when you started recieving dispersments)
  • All Forms 1095 Health Insurance Statements, Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received,
  • Military Retirement pay (reported on form 1099)
  • 1098-T Tuition 1098-E (also need qualified educational expenses, information about scholarships, grants and previous year credits. Students will need to know if their parents claimed them)
  • Total paid for daycare and the provider's tax ID number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number
  • Total amount paid for rent and landlord’s name and address for your primary residence and months rented
  • Total amount of Indiana Property Tax paid for your primary residence and months lived there. (Look up here)
  • Additional Worksheets if needed to determine -Who pays More than 50% of cost to keep a home or -Determine Support
  • All letters or communications from the IRS or Indiana DOR
  • Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable
  • A copy of last year’s federal & state returns, if available
  • To e-file a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign
