A Message from our President, Beth Burnett

I love living in a small town. I do. I could have lived anywhere in the country, and I chose Jennings County. United Way is such an intricate part of being a small town. Our community comes together when we need each other, and I see this in United Way in so many different areas. The way our United Way leads the community during disasters or emergencies, VITA, Dollars for Scholars, our Charity Tracker network, Emergency Food & Shelter Program, and opportunities for non-profits to apply for grants. I feel United Way is a vital resource for our community and so very important.

That being said, it takes all of us and we need help reaching our community goals. We need volunteers and we need donations. The world is changing, and we must rebound, to navigate the changes together and ensure that our United Way thrives in order to continue leading our community.

Beth Burnett,
President
Board of Directors

Impact Areas graphic

Our internal United Way Programs fall into these areas below. Agencies are using these impact areas in 2024 applications for 2025 funding.

Our Financial Stability Programs work to address self sufficiency and empower those on the lower rungs of the economic ladder to help themselves write a new future story for themselves, and their families. These programs are coordinated in house at United way, and range from our VITA Program, to periodic offerings like our Getting Ahead Class (for people who want to build a better life) Financial Peace University(learn to get out of debt and save for the future), or Bridges out of Poverty Workshops (for professionals & educators). Click to learn more about these programs.

Emergency Food & Shelter Program

Jennings County Emergency Foor and Shelter Program header

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program was created by Congress to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States and its territories by allocating federal funds for the provision of food and shelter. The Emergency Food and Shelter program is a rapid response program, and our local board typically has 25-30 days from the time an award is announced at the National level to submit a local board plan for our jurisdiction. The U. S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA), local government, American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army; and, United Way Worldwide are required members of the local board, lead by our United Way. This Local Board comprised of representatives of these National Agencies is charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help supplement food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. More about the local program is available online at efsp.jcunitedway.org
